If contemporary art is about the idea of dissolving the boundary between utilitarian and fine art, then the art can be considered successful. If an artist is cunning enough, re-appropriation should always be possible. The question remains that if conceptual art involves readymades or common objects, then the artist has to expect future knockoffs, send-ups and parodies, inadvertent plagiarization, and in some cases reprimand and punishment. (A good motto: always consider the effect the future will have on your work.)
