After the advent of TV, people began to read less because TV supplanted it as a form of entertainment, and people confused it with reading as being somehow useless, unless it had something to do with the new world that TV created. That new world made celebrity more possible, or was perhaps easier to come by than to be a Hollywood film star. The Internet and social media made it easier still, without the prerequisites of talent. Personality could make up for it.
