On Doubt and Certainty:

"The notion of causality-that events have causes and that a cause is something that precedes an effect-is so ingrained in our existence that we could not live without it. When you deposited fifty cents into the Academy vending machine for an aspirin, you expected something to happen; if nothing did you would have assumed that something had gone wrong, that the natural course of events had been violated. Society as a whole accepts the principle of causality. Legally, all of us (except insurance companies) are responsible for our actions. People travel across the continent, not because astrologers tell them it is a good day to fly, but because they believe aircraft engines have the ability to lift planes off the ground. Generally, people live by the maxim."
