This current desire for connection was never a thing, say back in the 1980s. I was looking at some family photographs from the 1980s yesterday, and I was thinking about the world of those photographs. Our family never talked about “a desire for connection”. We talked on the phone once a week, and we met on Sundays for dinner. There wasn't a constant need for attention–my mother wasn't calling me two times a day. But then we didn't have the sense of loneliness that we have now. I suppose that once you have lots of connection, there's always going to be a desire for it. After all, desire is also an addiction.
