Pursuing power, prestige, and status is a "smart move" in evolutionary terms, as higher status historically provided access to more resources and reduced worries about survival. Groups often solidify when faced with a common threat. Individuals may tolerate pain or cruelty from their own "in-group" if they anticipate that life without the group would be even more dangerous.
