In the book The Gift of Not Belonging, the author Rami Kaminski, a psychiatrist, recounts a turning point for one of his severely depressed patients who thought she was a failure and wasn't good at anything, and stayed in bed all day. He pointed out she was very good at exactly that--staying in bed, and was an ice-breaker in terms of getting her to see that one could actually be good at something by admitting it, then moving towards something that would be self-motivating to revisit things she had a passion for. Usually those things get people motivated to get up.
