We think that rules stop us, but they can actually facilitate creativity. Music theory is full of rules, and you can actually be more uniquely productive. But you can also make up your own constraints based on other ones, for example, using only minor chords. You couldn't do that if you didn't know how to create a minor triad, regardless of key. Keys are the primary rule that we tacitly follow, but they can become a prison.
